What are zodiac signs?

The Western zodiac is a system of 12 signs based on the position of the Sun at the time of a person's birth. Each sign corresponds to a roughly 30-day period of the year and is associated with a symbol, element (Fire, Earth, Air, or Water), and ruling planet. The system originates from ancient Babylonian astronomy and was later developed by Greek and Roman astrologers.

The four elements

The 12 signs are divided into four elements, each with three signs: Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) — passionate, dynamic, and temperamental. Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) — grounded, practical, and stable. Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) — intellectual, communicative, and social. Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) — intuitive, emotional, and deeply connected to their feelings.

Ruling planets

Each zodiac sign is associated with a ruling planet that influences its traits and energy. In classical astrology, the seven classical planets each ruled one or two signs. Modern astrology also incorporates the outer planets: Uranus (Aquarius), Neptune (Pisces), and Pluto (Scorpio), which were discovered after the telescope's invention.

Is astrology scientifically valid?

Astrology is not considered a science — controlled studies have found no reliable evidence that zodiac signs predict personality traits or life outcomes. However, many people find astrology useful as a framework for self-reflection and exploring personality archetypes. Whether you treat it as a belief system or just an entertaining lens, zodiac signs remain a popular and culturally significant tradition worldwide.
