How to calculate a tip

To calculate a tip, multiply the bill amount by the tip percentage divided by 100. For example, a 20% tip on a $85 bill is $85 × 0.20 = $17. Add the tip to the bill to get the total: $85 + $17 = $102. Dividing the total by the number of people gives each person's share. This tool handles all three steps at once, updating instantly as you type.

What percentage should you tip?

Tipping norms vary by country and service type. In the United States, 15% is the baseline for adequate service, 18–20% is standard for good service, and 25% or more is appropriate for exceptional service. For counter-service or takeout, 10% is common. In many European countries, tips are smaller (5–10%) or rounding up the bill is typical. For international travel, research local customs before you go.

Splitting the bill fairly

When splitting a bill among a group, the simplest method is to divide the total (including tip) equally. This tool supports any number of people, so you can enter 2, 4, 10, or any size party. If people ordered different amounts, you may want to calculate individual tips separately — but for most casual restaurant situations, splitting the total evenly is the fastest and least awkward approach.

Tip on pre-tax or post-tax amount?

In the US, tipping is generally calculated on the pre-tax amount (the subtotal), since tax is not part of the service you received. However, it's common to simply tip on the full total shown on the bill — the difference is small in practice. This tool lets you enter whatever bill amount you want to tip on, so either approach works. Just enter the number you want to base the tip calculation on.
