Twitter/X character limits explained

Twitter/X uses a 280-character limit for standard tweets — doubled from the original 140-character limit that defined the platform from its launch until 2017. X Premium subscribers have access to longer posts, but the overwhelming majority of engagement on the platform happens in the standard 280-character format. Your bio allows 160 characters, your display name is capped at 50 characters, and your location field is limited to 30 characters.

How Twitter/X counts your 280 characters

Understanding what counts and what does not is essential for writing tweets that do not get cut off unexpectedly. The rules are different from what most people assume.

URLs always count as 23 characters

Regardless of how short or long a URL is, Twitter/X wraps it in a t.co shortener and counts it as exactly 23 characters. A five-character URL and a 200-character URL both cost the same 23 characters. This means you always know precisely how many characters a link takes — there are no surprises when you add a URL to a tweet.

Images, polls, and quoted tweets

Attaching an image, GIF, or video to a tweet does not reduce your character count — media attachments are handled separately. Polls do not consume characters either. A quoted tweet, however, does consume characters because it includes the t.co link to the original tweet, which counts as 23 characters. If you quote a tweet and add commentary, your usable text space is effectively 257 characters.

Twitter/X bio: 160 characters to define yourself

160 characters is roughly two short sentences — enough to state who you are, what you do, and optionally a relevant hashtag or location. Unlike a LinkedIn headline, the Twitter bio is visible in full on your profile page and in hover cards, so there is no fold to worry about. Strong bios lead with a concrete, specific description rather than an abstract label. "Data journalist covering AI, climate, and finance" outperforms "Passionate storyteller and change-maker" in both clarity and search discoverability.

Display name limit: 50 characters

Your display name — the bold text shown above your @handle — can be up to 50 characters and can include spaces, emoji, and special characters, unlike the @handle itself. Many creators and brands use this field to add a credential, a location flag, or a relevant emoji. Keep in mind the display name is the first text a viewer reads, so clarity should take priority over cleverness.

Writing tweets that work within 280 characters

The case for keeping it short

Analysis of high-engagement tweets consistently shows that posts under 100 characters attract more retweets and replies than longer ones. Shorter tweets leave visible whitespace in the feed, making them easier to process while scrolling. They also leave room for quoted replies without requiring expansion. When you have said everything you need to say in 80 characters, do not pad it to 200.

Thread strategy: each tweet as a standalone

When your content genuinely needs more than 280 characters, a thread is the right format. The most effective threads are written so every tweet makes sense independently — readers often encounter a thread mid-stream, not from the first tweet. Number your tweets (1/7, 2/7…) so readers understand context, and ensure each tweet delivers a complete thought. Draft each tweet in this counter in isolation before composing the thread.

When a Twitter character counter is most useful

A character counter is most valuable when drafting content in a notes app or document before posting, writing a new bio without being logged in, or planning tweets in advance as part of a content calendar. Counting before you open the app eliminates the frustration of discovering you are over the limit only when the post button is blocked. Paste your text here, hit the exact count, and post with confidence.
